Kan kaliumjodide oplossing in water inwendig gebruikt worden of is er altijd een toevoeging van jodium nodig?

Eerst en vooral is kaliumjodide zelf goed oplosbaar in water en is dit de molecule die vaak toegevoegd wordt aan jodium om de oplosbaarheid (a.d.h.v. complexvorming) of stabiliteit daarvan te verhogen. Uit de paragraaf ‘uses and administration’ in de Martindale kan afgeleid worden dat een oplossing van kaliumjodide inwendig gebruikt kan worden. Kaliumjodide dient hierbij voldoende verdund te worden om maagirritatie te voorkomen.
“For the prophylaxis and treatment of iodine deficiency
disorders (below) it may be given as potassium or sodium
iodide, iodised oil, or potassium iodate. […] Iodine may be given as a solution with potassium iodide (Aqueous Iodine Oral Solution BP 2008; Lugol’s Solution or Strong Iodine Solution USP 31) which contains in each mL 130 mg of free and combined iodine; a dose of 0.1 to 0.3 mL in milk or water is given three times daily for 10 to 14 days. Alternatively, potassium iodide has been given in doses of up to 250 mg three times daily with food. Solutions of potassium iodide intended for oral use should be given well diluted to avoid gastric irritation”
